The land route to Crimea has become a "death route."
Drones are attacking supply routes along the route connecting the occupied territories of Ukraine with the aggressor country, Russia. Defense forces are not disclosing details of the tactics, but, by all accounts, they caught the enemy off guard.
This was reported on Thursday, June 11, by The Guardian on Thursday, June 11, in a detailed report on Ukrainian strikes along the R-280 highway, which runs from Rostov-on-Don (Russia) to the annexed Crimea through the occupied territories of Ukraine.
As the author of the article notes, Russian occupiers call this highway Novorossiya, but Ukrainian forces have renamed it the “road of death,” as it is now under fire control by Defense Forces drones tracking Russian convoys.
For Moscow, this road—which has been almost completely closed to civilian traffic since the end of last month—is of particular importance, the author notes. It is the main land supply corridor for Russian occupation forces in the south, which bypass the vulnerable Kerch Bridge.
Drivers are recording footage that captures not only burned-out trucks on the side of the road. Some videos also show UAV attacks.
This week, traffic on the Chongar Bridge, connecting the occupied part of the Kherson region with annexed Crimea, was also halted following a series of attacks by Ukrainian drones, The Guardian reports.
The goal of the Ukrainian strikes is to destroy enemy targets at a distance of 20 to 200 kilometers from the front line, with a focus on logistics and supply routes.
The article also cites data provided by the commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Forces Robert (Madyar) Brovdi. On Tuesday, June 9, he stated that due to systematic strikes by Ukrainian drones, military cargo traffic on Highway R-280 had plummeted by 71%.
Ukrainian units are not disclosing details of the new tactics, however, their key element is likely the use of swarms of drones to strike logistics routes in such numbers that, by all accounts, caught Russian troops off guard, writes The Guardian.
It is known that American-made Hornet strike drones were actively involved in the attacks. The Defense Forces also apparently used the new Ukrainian Morrigan drone.
A collaborator and the so-called “governor” of the Zaporizhzhia region, Yevgeny Balitsky, also claimed that Ukrainian drones are remotely mining the highway near the Russian-occupied city of Berdyansk. He urged drivers to “limit travel unless absolutely necessary.”
The Guardian also notes that the new Ukrainian tactic has been highlighted by analysts, including the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
In a recent report, experts noted that Ukrainian medium-range strikes are already yielding tangible operational results, including the weakening of Russia’s ability to use key logistics routes connecting Russia with occupied Crimea, such as the M-14 Rostov-Crimea highway, as well as logistics routes connecting the occupied territories of southern Ukraine with Donetsk.
