Trump called off the operation due to the risk of a major war.

The U.S. had been developing a plan for a ground operation in Iran to seize its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. However, President Donald Trump halted preparations for the mission, according to CNN.

Secret U.S. Plan

According to the publication’s sources, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Kane had to urgently return to the US last month from a meeting of high-ranking NATO officials in Brussels to personally hear a briefing on the US military’s plans to seize Iran’s enriched uranium by force.

One of CNN’s sources specified that Kane subsequently presented options for carrying out such an operation to Trump.

However, according to sources cited by journalists, the American leader put the operation on hold due to warnings that such actions would likely provoke a serious response from Iran, prolong the war, and further destabilize the global economy. Trump was concerned about the possibility of significant casualties among American soldiers.

Planning for the operation took place amid statements by Trump that the U.S. and Iran were nearing an agreement to open the Strait of Hormuz and conclude negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

CNN sources noted that physically removing uranium from the underground tunnels at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan would require the deployment of hundreds of special forces troops and a de facto full-scale invasion.

Military officials assessed the risks to the U.S. military as “high or extreme.” Trump himself was skeptical of the idea, stating that no one would be able to reach the material buried under mountains.

Tehran was preparing an economic “nuclear option”

According to the publication’s sources, Iran, in turn, was developing a serious economic response in the event of a breakdown in negotiations and the continuation of the war.

Tehran wanted to force the Yemeni Houthis to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—a key maritime artery for global trade and an important route that had been used as an alternative passage amid months of instability in the Strait of Hormuz.
