The U.S. president said that his colleague had been experiencing health problems.
Following death last Saturday of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, known for his hardline stance toward Russia and for calling Vladimir Putin an illegitimate president, speculation has surfaced in the public sphere that Russian intelligence agencies were involved in his death. However, President Donald Trump said in an interview with American journalists that he does not support this idea and made it clear that there is no reason to doubt the preliminary conclusion of the medical examiner’s office that an aortic rupture was the cause of Graham’s death.
On July 13, Newsmax host Greg Kelly asked Trump if he had any concerns or suspicions regarding Graham’s death, given that “the Russians have a habit of targeting those they don’t like”. The U.S. president responded by stating that the senator had “serious” health problems. “In response to this conspiracy theory, I’d love to say ‘yes,’ but I think he had [health] problems… and his father died at about the same age. He had problems that ran quite deep and weren’t all that easy to detect,” said the White House chief. He added that, according to doctors’ reports, a certain part of Graham’s body “literally exploded.”
On Monday, Graham’s office reported that, according to the preliminary findings of medical examiners, the politician died from a rupture of the inner wall of the aorta. It was noted that the official cause of death would be announced after the necessary examinations. The senator, who was an active advocate for increasing military support for Ukraine and putting pressure on Moscow, died on July 11 at his home on Capitol Hill. The day before, he had visited Kyiv, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
British financier Bill Browder, for example, has suggested that Graham may have been killed by Russian intelligence services, according to The Moscow Times.
“I don’t want to be a conspiracy theorist, but <Lindsey Graham was the main sponsor of the bill imposing devastating sanctions against Russia… He had just returned from Ukraine, where, as is well known, Russian agents are active. The Russians are experts in using poisons whose effects mimic heart attacks,” he wrote on X on July 12. Browder also called for all necessary investigations to be conducted “immediately,” as he had “seen enough suspicious deaths linked to Russia.”
Similar suspicions were voiced by sociologist Igor Eidman. In his opinion, the Kremlin viewed Graham as the figure who changed Trump’s stance toward Russia. The sociologist suggested that during his last visit to Ukraine, Russian intelligence services could have poisoned the senator, for example, using a slow-acting poison.
MAGA activist and Trump supporter Laura Loomer also insisted on the theory that the Republican had been poisoned by Russia or Iran, demanding an immediate toxicological examination. The first deputy chair of the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee, Svetlana Zhurova, claimed that this was a “publicity stunt” aimed at boosting popularity ahead of the election.
