The Azerbaijani leader has made a number of statements that are embarrassing for Russia.
The Kremlin considers Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s stance on Ukraine to be misguided, but does not view these differences as a threat to bilateral relations. This was stated by Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov, according to an RBC correspondent.
The day before, Aliyev, responding to a question from a Ukrainian journalist, stated that Azerbaijan would continue to support Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He also called on Ukraine not to accept occupation.
Aliyev further stated that he regards the republic’s time as part of the Russian Empire and the USSR as a colonial period. “We were colonized in the 19th century. Then we were part of the Soviet Union, where we had no independence. We were part of the USSR, a republic, yes, but one without rights. Our historical memory retains an understanding of what it means to be a colony and then to become a free state,” Aliyev said.
This is not the first time Aliyev has made such assessments of the Soviet period. Previously, he described Azerbaijan’s incorporation into the USSR as a consequence of occupation and asserted that this prevented the republic from becoming a fully-fledged democratic state.
