The Russian Stock Market Has Experienced Its Longest Decline Since 2008

The Moscow Exchange Index has been falling for the sixth consecutive month.
At the close of the main trading session on Monday, August 31, the Moscow Exchange Index (IMOEX) rose 3.02% from the close of the main session on August 28, to 2,178.87 points. However, since the beginning of August, the benchmark has lost 2.13%.
Thus, the Russian index has been falling for the sixth consecutive month—the longest market decline since 2008, according to calculations by “RBC Investments”. From March through August 2026, the Moscow Exchange Index lost 22.16%.
In 2008, the Moscow Exchange Index experienced its longest-lasting downturn—it lasted six consecutive months, from June through November. During that time, the IMOEX lost 68.25%. This was caused by the global financial crisis, which also affected Russia.
