The skies over Russia are closing in.
Ukraine has officially notified the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) that Russian airspace is unsafe for civil aviation and has urged airlines to avoid flying over the territory of the aggressor state, the Russian Federation.
This was reported on X on Wednesday, September 2, by Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sibiga.
He explained that Russian airspace is becoming increasingly dangerous amid a “sharp escalation of Russian terror against Ukraine”.
“Russia is deliberately ignoring the existing threats caused by its aggression against Ukraine, which has already led to several incidents in recent years,” Andrii Sybiha noted.
He emphasized that the decision to alert the ICAO was made so that all airlines and governments would be aware of the potential risks—"even if Russia refuses to fulfill its obligation to inform them."
On September 1, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian airspace is becoming dangerous for airlines, insurers, and other participants in international air travel. He emphasized that Ukraine poses no threat to civil aviation and has no intention of attacking passenger aircraft. However, he noted that the situation regarding air travel is changing due to the presence of drones in the skies over Russia.
Separately, Zelenskyy addressed the airlines that continue to operate flights to Russian airports—in particular, to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other key destinations.
