Now obviously the authorities are using petty tactics to make protest awkward.

But are you really so naive to think that doesn't happen in the UK?

G20 protestors have been beaten with truncheons and one was killed by being pushed to the floor by one Metropolitan Policeman.

Do you think heavy handed policing only happens in Belarus ? That people are not held without charge in Britain ?

Are you not aware that several 'terrorist suspects' are held in detention in Britain without charge or charged with 'secret evidence'?

The situation is clear in Belarus> despite electoral irregularities, Lukashenko is popular because he has protected people from mass unemployment.

The youth activists are frustrated entrepreneurs who want neoliberal capitalism of the sort now increasingly discredited in the West.

Face facts. This protest isn't about freedom.

It's about who gets the cut of the privatisation cake, being "Western" and craving the consumerism young people like me in the West are increasingly tired of.

Freedom is not about the right to consumerism.

If it were Lukashenko would be a beacon of liberty, as I don't see much evidence In Minsk of the immiseration I have witnessed in L'viv, where the poor who lost out due to the 'reforms' groups like Charter97 hanker after, wind up eating out of bins

We want the democracy which will be MORAL.
Liberalism you mentioned, is the model of "lost shame" humanity. In Eastern Europe it'll never be taken seriosly, because we are self-liberating ourselves. Because of the efforts of selfliberation from inside, we never loose devine Consciense (out of faith, hope&love).
West Europe was liberated from regime from the outside (gratis by the USA) and, naturally, it has absolutelly no experience of inner efforts to freedom. (Your Kingdom - is the "sweet", naturalistic and corrupted sleep of conscience; ancient dictatorship spread into sophisticated today).
All of this is - WHY you have now this social model where sex(dream) is acting instead of real culture. West Europe is living mostly in the technological dream from which must come the actual self liberation or AWAKENING. Dr. Freud most go. Only then you'll understand East Europe, particularly - the Belarusan democrats, as they are...

Dear Friends of EU and Belarus,

Relating to every country of Eastern Partnership has to be used the individual method. And this is most obvious in the case of Belarus.
Dictarorship means DICTATORSHIP because the irrational FEAR is the main tool here.
And the main proof-‘generator’ of this inner-terror (fear) - Mr. Lukashenka - doesn’t make the secret that his spiritual roots are in Hitler, Stalin and that he is the ‘Orthodox Church atheist’.
WHAT needs human who is the hostage with all its family, of such moral pervert and who is living in the circumstances of regime of constant FEAR (for work, for the critic oppinion against the regime; in Belarus is total alcoholism and the real life’s rate is very low...) Undoubtedly, First af all – it is the compensation at the HUMANITARIAN soil, which in our case could be only the unconditional door-opening of Europe for (comparably not a big number - 9,5 mln.) the people of Belarus.
If someone seriously intended to put Russia aside of monopoly of supporting the (bad) social style in Belarus, it always involves the copmensation/neutralization of the existing Russian “privileges” for the Belarusian people, not the regime (!!!). And it can be accomplished only by the social power of EU, of the United Europe. Literally it takes to make the Belarusian folk free to work and study in EU; to make available the humanitarian programs exchange between the country and EU, ...like it does Russia to Belarus. Don’t nourish the regime by any financing and by inviting to the round-table its present, Russia-animated political ‘Golem’ for Europe (Mr. Lukashenka), but let the Belarusian people themselves get free from this nihgtmare of kolkhoz-thinking of Lukashism. The emmigration into EU will compatible with one of Baltic states but the status of life inside of Belarus will change dramatically in favor of EU.
I presume, one can say this is “too radical”. Well, but at the same time everybody KNOWS, (or acknowledges), that only and only by such NON-STANDART, deep measures of mature political practice, and never by the “real-politik” - it is possible to make any little differences at one of the political fields of EU, as is the Republic of Belarus with its heavily usurped power by the international criminal suspect Mr. Lukashenka.
