The transaction violates U.S. law.
New Jersey Governor Miki Sherrill warned port and terminal operators of possible criminal liability for unloading tankers carrying Russian diesel fuel. She announced this on the social media platform X.
In a letter to port and terminal operators in the state, Sherrill stated that importing Russian diesel violates U.S. federal law. According to her, those who unload such fuel face serious civil and criminal consequences.
“New Jersey will not stand idly by while Donald Trump supports Vladimir Putin at the expense of Americans. Instead of lowering costs, these imports help finance Putin’s war against Ukraine... I cannot let this go unanswered,” the governor said.
As a reminder, on October 9, Trump struck an energy deal with Putin. The White House authorized Russia to sell 5 million metric tons of diesel fuel on the global market—primarily to the U.S.—through April 2027, thereby lifting some sanctions against Moscow. Trump hopes this will help lower diesel fuel prices in the U.S. market.
