On November 2, the U.S. military launched strike on the Iranian island of Qeshm, located at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. This is the latest in a series of limited strikes that the U.S. has been carrying out covertly against Iran for several weeks. This is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Unlike in previous phases of the war, Washington is not publicly acknowledging the attacks this time. According to one official, the campaign is being deliberately kept under wraps so as not to give the impression that preparations are underway for a resumption of large-scale hostilities.
Some of the WSJ’s sources consider these strikes to be defensive: their goal is to prevent Iran from attacking commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz with impunity. On November 2, social media reported explosions on Qeshm.
The island is home to a large underground missile facility, a naval base, and a powerful desalination plant. The U.S. has already carried out strikes on Qeshm, and the administration has even discussed the possibility of seizing it.
On the same day, the U.S. leader downplayed the risk of a new war with Iran. “We had a war with Iran. We won. I don’t know if you can even call it a war, since we haven’t been at war for several months now,” Trump told reporters.
When asked whether he was considering strikes against Iran after the November 3 midterm elections, the president replied, “No.” At the same time, officials in his administration insist that he is still weighing all options.
For several weeks, Trump has been saying that the U.S. could return to full-scale war after the election. According to the WSJ, U.S. Central Command has deployed additional missile defense systems and ammunition to the region. Gulf states have warned that a brief but intense operation could begin shortly after the election.
Last week, Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, personally briefed Trump at the White House on the progress of the conflict.
