The doctors described another surgery.
The patient in the most serious condition, who was injured in a bus crash in the Bryansk region, remains in intensive care, but his condition has been stabilized. The teenager has regained consciousness and is already breathing on his own. He is scheduled to undergo another surgery on Tuesday, doctors reported on STV.
According to Andrei Zapoliansky, a pediatric surgeon at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Pediatric Surgery , the patient in the most critical condition among the injured children remains in intensive care. A few days ago, he underwent surgery performed by a multidisciplinary team.
“Four surgical procedures were performed on different anatomical areas of the body. During the surgery, multiple shrapnel fragments resulting from the blast injury were removed. Reconstruction and stabilization of the hand were performed, along with debridement of multiple soft-tissue wounds,” the doctor explained.
Artem’s condition is currently stable. He has been weaned off the ventilator and is breathing on his own. The teenager has regained consciousness and is under medical supervision. He is scheduled to undergo another surgery on Tuesday—reconstructive surgery on his left hand.
His mother, Natalia Polskaya, who was also on the bus at the time of the attack, remains by the boy’s side at all times.
“I pulled him out myself. One of the other parents helped me. We flagged down a car—just a regular car; probably some summer resident driving by. There was no ambulance, the wound was serious, and he’d lost a lot of blood. We drove to the nearest town, where they provided first aid. It was scary driving there, but once we were on Belarusian territory, the peaceful sky above our heads—that’s not just a figure of speech; it’s priceless,” the woman said.
As a result of the attack, the pregnant wife of one of the team’s coaches, who was accompanying the group, was killed. The coach himself sustained multiple injuries and was taken to a military hospital. According to doctors, his condition is stable and is assessed as moderately severe.
The chief surgeon of the medical unit at the 432nd Main Military Clinical Medical Center of the Armed Forces of Belarus Alexei Trukhan reported that the man suffered severe injuries and may require further treatment.
“He has severe injuries; the surgeries were performed in a timely manner, but there is always a risk of complications. He has already undergone surgery for a severe abdominal injury, as well as for a severe blast injury to his hand, which requires multiple follow-up surgeries,” the surgeon noted.
As a reminder, the tragedy occurred on the morning of June 17 near the village of Rudnya, not far from the town of Pochep in the Bryansk Region of the Russian Federation—45 km from the border with Ukraine. According to Russian officials, a drone struck the bus, which was carrying 43 passengers. Six people were injured; a pregnant woman—the wife of a coach at the Rechitsa Children’s and Youth Sports School No. 2—was killed.
The Investigative Committees of Russia and Belarus have opened criminal cases (in Russia, on charges of a terrorist attack). The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among other things, stated that “Belarusians are absolutely prohibited from traveling to conflict zones, areas of hostilities, and adjacent regions.”
Late in the evening on June 17, the Belarusian children returned home to Rechitsa. On the morning of June 18, six of the injured were transported to Belarus by ambulance.
The Ukrainian General Staff denies any involvement in the attack on the bus, emphasizing that “during the specified period, the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not use unmanned aerial vehicles against targets in the Bryansk region.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine was not involved, citing the conclusions of international experts. He expressed confidence that this incident was a provocation by the Russian side aimed at dragging Belarusians into the war.
