The EU And Several European Countries Summoned Russian Diplomats

The European Union and several member states summoned representatives from the Russian embassies in connection with hybrid attack in Leipzig, for which Germany has blamed Moscow.

The head of the EU’s diplomatic service, Kaja Kallas, stated at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland that her diplomatic service had summoned the Russian ambassador in Brussels over the incident in Leipzig.

At that meeting, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reported that he had summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires in Paris to lodge a protest. He also proposed imposing new sanctions against Russia, specifically against its “shadow fleet.”

Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen announced that he had summoned the Russian ambassador and called the incident in Leipzig “unacceptable.”

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot stated on Tuesday on the X platform that he had summoned the Russian ambassador.

“This attack is the latest in a long series of unacceptable incursions into the territory of other EU countries and NATO members over the past few months… An operation involving explosives on European soil is an extremely serious hostile act. Russia cannot assume it can carry out such operations in our countries with impunity,” he noted.

On September 1, Germany directly accused Russia of a hybrid attack at Leipzig Airport in early August and announced retaliatory measures, including the closure of the Consulate General in Bonn and the “Russian House” in Berlin. In connection with this, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul summoned the Russian ambassador.

As a reminder, on August 4, a drone carrying explosives was discovered at the Leipzig/Halle Airport near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane that was being used to transport military supplies.
