A new disciplinary investigation has been launched within the Social Democratic Party.
Two local chapters of the Social Democratic Party of Germany have initiated a new disciplinary proceeding against former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder following his trip to Moscow to celebrate the birthday of Russian dictator Putin.
This is reported by Spiegel.
Schröder’s visit to Putin has once again put him at risk of sanctions
The party confirmed that it had received two complaints demanding that disciplinary proceedings be initiated. They are currently reviewing whether the complaints meet the formal requirements.
This was reported by the executive director of the SPD’s district chapter in Hanover Christoph Matterne. He declined to name the chapters that filed the complaints, citing party rules governing the handling of such cases.
Schröder could face a reprimand or expulsion from the party.
Previous attempts to punish the former chancellor were unsuccessful
The issue of sanctions against the former chancellor was already considered several years ago due to his close ties to Russia.
At that time, disciplinary proceedings were initiated by 17 SPD local chapters. In the summer of 2022, the party’s local chapter in Hanover ruled that Schröder had not violated party rules. Seven local chapters appealed this decision, but to no avail.
In 2023, the SPD’s district arbitration committee in Hanover rejected all requests for sanctions. Subsequently, the party’s federal arbitration committee also dismissed the appeals.
As a reminder, the Kremlin reported that Putin celebrated his 74th birthday in the company of Gerhard Schröder.
On October 7, the former German chancellor was in Moscow and visited one of the stores in the Globus hypermarket chain in Russia, where he recently took up a position.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sharply criticized Schröder’s trip to see Putin and his participation in the birthday celebration.
